Using a portable ultrasound machine, an orthopedic ultrasound produces sound waves to examine your bones, ligaments and muscles and make sure they are interacting correctly. An ultrasound is painless and, depending on the type of exam, may take 15-45 minutes.
In osteopathic therapy, an osteopathic manipulative treatment table (or "OMT" table) allows the doctor to adjust a patient's body by manipulating the skeleton and muscles to alleviate pain and promote wellness. In this way, our doctors employ hands-on care in addition to prescribing medication for relief.
Non-Operative Fracture Care
Instead of operating on a broken or fractured bone, splints and casts are used to support and protect injured bones, ligaments, tendons and other tissues. They keep a bone's broken ends together and as straight as possible. Casts and splints also help with pain and swelling and protect the injured area from more harm.
A cast wraps all the way around an injury and can only be removed in the doctor's office. All casts are custom-made with fiberglass or plaster.
A splint is like a "half cast." The hard part of a splint does not wrap all the way around the injured area. It is held in place by an elastic bandage or other material. Unlike casts, splints can be easily removed or adjusted. Many splints are custom-made from fiberglass or plaster. Others are pre-made and come in lots of shapes and sizes for different injuries.
Steroid Injections for Pain Relief
Steroids (short for corticosteroids) are synthetic drugs that closely resemble cortisol, a hormone that your adrenal glands produce naturally. Steroids decrease inflammation and are used to treat a variety of inflammatory diseases and conditions. Injecting steroids into one or two local areas of inflammation allows doctors to deliver a high dose of medication directly to the problem area.
Physical Exams and Stress Tests
To make sure that your body can adequately handle physical stress, employers, athletic teams and your physician may require a physical exam and/or a stress test. Employers want to make sure that you can do a job safely. Athletic teams also require back-to-school physical exams before getting on the field. Physicians use physical exams and stress test to assess your body and detect underlying issues. Whether it's a pre-employment screening, a back-to-school physical or a diagnostic stress test, you can get it done with Texas A&M Physicians Sports Medicine.
